The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred, 2 and neither does he speak out of his own desire: 3 Indeed it is not except a Revelation which is revealed, 4 taught him by one terrible in power, 5 One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form 6 being on the higher horizon, 7 Then he drew nigh and came down 8 And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer. 9 Then he revealed to Allah's servant whatever he had to reveal. 10 The heart lied not in that which he saw. 11 Will ye therefore dispute with him concerning that which he hath seen? 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 Nigh unto the lote-tree at the boundary. 14 Near which is the garden, the place to be resorted to. 15 When the Lote-tree was covered over with what it was covered over; 16 His eye did not waver, nor did it stray, 17 and he certainly saw some of the greatest Signs of His Lord. 18 Have you then considered the Lat and the Uzza, 19 and the third one, Manat? -- 20 Is the male for you and for Him the female? 21 That indeed is an unfair division -- 22 They are nothing but some names that you have coined, you and your forefathers – Allah has not sent any proof for them; they follow only guesses and their own desires; whereas the guidance from their Lord has come to them. 23 Can ever man get what he desires? 24 Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 25
