A multitude of those (on the Right Hand) will be from the first generation (who embraced Islam). 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 They had lived in luxury before this 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)! 51 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum. 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 Verily we are undone. 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
