The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. 5 Verily they behold it afar off. 6 but We see it is nigh. 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 and the mountains shall be as plucked wool-tufts, 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. 14 By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- 15 that will strip off the scalp. 16 It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience] 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- 27 for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; 28 And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). 29 except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: 32 And those who are in their testimonies upright 33 And those who of their prayer are observant. 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
