In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou wrapped up in thy raiment! 1 Stand (to prayer) by night, but not all night,- 2 A half of it or a little less 3 or a little more, but recite the Quran slowly and distinctly. 4 Verily We! anon We shall cast upon thee a weighty word. 5 [and,] verily, the hours of night impress the mind most strongly and speak with the clearest voice, 6 Verily, there is for you by day prolonged occupation with ordinary duties, 7 And remember the Name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with a complete devotion. 8 He is the Lord of the East and the West; there is no god but He. So take Him alone for your Guardian, 9 Bear patiently with what they say, and ignore them politely. 10 Leave Me to deal with the deniers, lords of ease and comfort (in this life); and do thou respite them awhile. 11 Surely with Us are heavy fetters and a flaming fire, 12 and a food that chokes, and a grievous chastisement. 13 on the Day the earth and mountains shall shake and the mountains crumble into shifting sand dunes. 14 BEHOLD, [O men,] We have sent unto you an apostle who shall bear witness to the truth before you, even as We sent an apostle unto Pharaoh: 15 But Fir'aun (Pharaoh) disobeyed the Messenger [Musa (Moses)], so We seized him with a severe punishment. 16 How, then, will you guard yourselves, if you disbelieve, on the day which shall make children grey-headed? 17 on which the heaven will split apart, and His promise is done. 18 Surely this is a reminder, then let him, who will take the way to his Lord. 19
