The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Arise and warn! 2 Thy Lord magnify, 3 and purify your robes, 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 And for the good-will of thy Lord be thou patient. 7 Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 and it will not be easy for the unbelievers. 10 Leave to Me the one, whom I have created all by Myself, 11 And gave him abundant wealth 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 I will make a distressing punishment overtake him. 17 Verily he considered, and devised. 18 and woe to him; how he plotted! 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 Then he looked, 21 Then frowned and grimaced. 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 and said: “This (Qur'an) is merely a sorcery of yore; 24 “This is nothing but the speech of a man.” 25 Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! 26 - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! - 27 It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned], 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 Over it are nineteen keepers. 30 And We have set none but angels as guardians of the Fire, and We have fixed their number (19) only as a trial for the disbelievers, in order that the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) may arrive at a certainty [that this Quran is the truth as it agrees with their Books i.e. their number (19) is written in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] and the believers may increase in Faith (as this Quran is the truth) and that no doubts may be left for the people of the Scripture and the believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy) and the disbelievers may say: "What Allah intends by this (curious) example?" Thus Allah leads astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none can know the hosts of your Lord but He. And this (Hell) is nothing else than a (warning) reminder to mankind. 31
