The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Cloaked one, 1 Arise and warn! 2 Thy Lord magnify 3 thy robes purify 4 stay away from sins 5 Do not give, thinking to gain greater 6 But for your Lord be patient. 7 For when the trumpet blows 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 and it will not be easy for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]. 14 Yet he desires that I should give more. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Indeed, he thought and deliberated. 18 and woe to him; how he plotted! 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 Then he looked around, 21 frowned and scowled, 22 then he retreated, and waxed proud. 23 and said: “This (Qur'an) is merely a sorcery of yore; 24 “This is nothing but the speech of a man.” 25 [Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]! 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned], 28 It shrivelleth the man. 29 there are nineteen [angels] in charge of it -- 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
