The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Cloaked one, 1 arise and give warning! 2 And your Lord glorify 3 Purify your inner self, 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 And be patient for the sake of your Lord (i.e. perform your duty to Allah)! 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 not an easy day for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- 11 And gave him vast wealth. 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 And made things easy for them. 14 After all that he desires that I should give more; 15 Never will he receive more. He has been hostile to Our revelations. 16 I will cover him with arduous torment. 17 Lo! He reflected, and determined -- 18 So accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 Then he looked, 21 and then he frowns and glares, 22 Then turned his back and waxed proud, 23 said, "This (the Quran) is nothing but magic, inherited from ancient magicians. 24 "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 I will cast him into hell. 26 And what will make you realize what hell is? 27 It neither leaves, nor spares. 28 It scorches people's skin 29 there are nineteen [angels] in charge of it -- 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
