Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
By the break of Day 1 and the ten nights, 2 And by the even and the odd, 3 And by the night when it departeth, 4 Is there (not) in these an adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand? 5 Have you not seen what your Lord did to the 'Ad 6 Iram of the pillars, 7 the like of which was never created in the countries? 8 And with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?- 9 (Also consider the people of) the Pharaoh who victimized people by placing them on the stake, 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 And made therein much mischief. 12 (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment; 13 indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. 14 Now, as for man, when his Lord trieth him, giving him honour and gifts, then saith he, (puffed up), "My Lord hath honoured me." 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan 17 And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor. 18 and you devour the inheritance [of others] with devouring greed, 19 and you ardently love wealth. 20 Nay! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 and thy Lord comes, and the angels rank on rank, 22 And Hell is brought near, that day will man remember, but of what avail will then remembering be? 23 He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life! 24 For, none can make suffer as He will make suffer [the sinners] on that Day, 25 And no one shall bind with (anything like) His binding. 26 O thou peaceful soul! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 "Enter you, then, among My honoured slaves, 29 "And enter you My Paradise!" 30
