The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 and you are a lodger in this country. 2 And the begetter and whom he begot. 3 that We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship. 4 Does he think that none has power over him! 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 Does he, then, think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 and a tongue and two lips? 9 And did We not show him the two highroads (of good and evil)? 10 But he could not scale the steep ascent. 11 And what have you understood, what the valley is! 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 of an orphaned relative 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 As for those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left 19 [with] fire closing in upon them. 20
