Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 and by parent and offspring, 3 Certainly We have created man to be in distress. 4 Does He think that no one will ever have control over him? 5 He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance." 6 Does man think that no one saw him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes? 8 And a tongue and a pair of lips? 9 And have shown him the two ways? 10 Yet he attempteth not the steep, 11 What will explain to you what the ascent is? 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 Or the giving of food in a day of privation 14 To an orphan near of kin. 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. 17 These are the fellows of the righthand. 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 and the Fire will close in on them. 20
True are the words of Allah the Almighty.
