The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ NAY! I call to witness this land 1 And thou art a freeman of this City;- 2 And by oath of your forefather Ibrahim, and by you – his illustrious son! 3 Verily, We have created man into [a life of] pain, toil and trial. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance." 6 Does he then think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips, 9 And showed him two highways (of good and evil)? 10 Yet he has not assaulted the steep; 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 (It is) the freeing of a slave, 13 Or to feed in times of famine 14 An orphan, of kin, 15 or of a needy [stranger] lying in the dust 16 and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion. 17 Those are the companions of the right. 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in. 20
