Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city 1 – this city wherein you have been rendered violable– 2 And the begetter and whom he begot. 3 that We have created man into a life of toil and trial. 4 Does he, then, think that no one has power over him? 5 He shall say: I have wasted much wealth. 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 And pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways? 10 Yet, he has not entered into Aqaba 11 And what will make you know the path that is steep? 12 (It is) the setting free of a slave, 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right. 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 Fire will be an awning over them. 20
