The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By oath of the night when it covers 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 And the creating of the male and the female, 3 Indeed, your efforts are diverse. 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 and believes in the truth of the ultimate good 6 We shall ease the way of fortune for him. 7 but for him that is a miser, and sufficed, 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 So We will very soon provide him hardship. 10 nor will his wealth profit him when he falls [into the pit]. 11 Verily We take upon Ourselves to guide, 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 and so I warn you of the raging fire 14 None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones 15 Who gives the lie (to the truth) and turns (his) back. 16 But the righteous one will avoid it - 17 Who gives his wealth in order to be pure. 18 not as payment for favours received, 19 acting only for the sake of his Lord the Most High -- 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
