The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Read (Prophet Muhammad) in the Name of your Lord who created, 1 Hath created man from a clot! 2 Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous - 3 who taught by the pen, 4 taught man what he did not know! 5 Nay! man is most surely inordinate, 6 that he sees himself sufficed. 7 Surely to your Lord is the return. 8 Hast thou seen him who dissuadeth 9 A servant when he prays? 10 Tell me, if he (Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) is on the guidance (of Allah)? 11 or orders piety? 12 Seest thou if he denies (Truth) and turns away? 13 Does he not know that Allah sees? 14 No indeed; if he does not desist, We shall drag him by the forelock; 15 A lying, sinful forelock! 16 Let him call on his associates for help 17 We too would summon the braves of the army. 18 By no means! Obey not thou him. Continue to adore, and continue to draw nigh. ۩ 19
