Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the dawn 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 And [by] the even [number] and the odd 3 and by the night when it departs. 4 Is there not an evidence in this for those who have sense? 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 Iram of the pillars, 7 the like of which was never created in the land, 8 And Thamood, who hewed out the rocks of the valley? 9 And the mighty Pharaoh 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 and spread much corruption in the land. 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. 14 BUT AS FOR man, whenever his Sustainer tries him by His generosity and by letting him enjoy a life of ease, he says, "My Sustainer has been [justly] generous towards me"; 15 But when He tries him by restraining his means, he says: "My Lord despises me." 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 And urge not on the feeding of AlMiskin (the poor)! 18 And you devour inheritance all with greed, 19 and you love wealth with an ardent love 20 Nay! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank, 22 and when Hell is brought near that Day. On that Day will man understand, but of what avail will that understanding be? 23 He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life! 24 So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment, 25 And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind. 26 O satisfied soul, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 "Enter then among My votaries, 29 and enter My Paradise.” 30
