The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Arise and warn 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 thy robes purify 4 And pollution shun. 5 And bestow not favour that thou mayest receive more. 6 but unto thy Sustainer turn in patience. 7 For when the trumpet shall sound, 8 That, at that time, shall be a difficult day, 9 For the unbelievers, anything but easy. 10 Leave Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 and to whom I have granted resources vast, 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 I made things smooth and easy for him, 14 Then he desires that I should add more. 15 By no means! Verily he hath been unto Our signs a foe. 16 I shall soon constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Verily, he thought and plotted; 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 Then he looked, 21 Then he frowned and scowled, 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 and said: 'This is no more than traced sorcery; 24 This is not but the word of a human being." 25 I will cast him into hell. 26 What do you think Hell-fire is? 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 It scorches the mortal. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
