A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 They had been affluent before, 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say: "Verily, those of olden times and those of later times 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 Drinking even as the camel drinketh. 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 "We are ruined, 66 Rather, we have been prevented' 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out; 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
