a large group of the earlier people 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 “They will all be gathered together – on the appointed time of the known day.” 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum. 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Do you make it grow or is it We who make it grow? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable), why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
