The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ NAY! I call to witness this land 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;- 3 We verily have created man in an atmosphere: 4 Thinketh he that none hath power over him? 5 He says, “I destroyed vast wealth.” 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 and a tongue, and two lips, 9 and guided him on the two paths (of good and evil)? 10 But he would not try to ascend the steep uphill road... 11 And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?- 12 (It is) the freeing of a slave, 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 to an orphan near of kin; 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion. 17 Their place will be on the right hand. 18 And those who denied Our signs, are the people of the left. 19 with the Fire closed above them. 20
