Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
By the dawn, 1 And ten nights, 2 And the even and the odd, 3 And [by] the night when it passes, 4 Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding? 5 Bethinkest thou not in what wise thy Lord did with the 'A'ad: 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 The like of which were not created in the (other) cities; 8 And (with) Thamud (people), who cut (hewed) out rocks in the valley (to make dwellings)? 9 And with Firaun, who used to crucify. 10 Who all waxed exorbitant in the cities, 11 And multiplied therein corruption. 12 so your Lord unleashed on them the scourge of punishment: 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 but when He tests him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Lord has disgraced me." 16 But nay, nay, [O men, consider all that you do and fail to do:] you are not generous towards the orphan, 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the needy. 18 And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether, 19 and you have a love of wealth which can never be satisfied. 20 No indeed! When the earth is crushed and ground to dust, 21 And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank, 22 And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him? 23 He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!” 24 For, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict, 25 nor will any bind as He binds. 26 (On the other hand it will be said): “O serene soul! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 "Enter thou, then, among My devotees! 29 enter My Paradise! 30
