Those who were left behind were glad that they were left behind by the Messenger of Allah, for they disliked to struggle in the Way of Allah with their wealth and their persons. They said: 'Do not go forth in the heat' Say: 'The Fire of Gehenna is more hot' Would that they understood! 81 Then let them laugh a little: they will weep much, as the reward of what they used to earn. 82 So, if God returns thee to a party of them and they ask leave of thee to go forth, say: 'You shall not go forth with me ever, and you shall not fight with me any enemy. You were well-pleased to tarry the first time, so now tarry with those behind.' 83 And do not pray [the funeral prayer, O Muhammad], over any of them who has died - ever - or stand at his grave. Indeed, they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger and died while they were defiantly disobedient. 84 Let neither their riches nor their children please you. With it Allah wants to punish them in this life, so that their souls depart while they disbelieve. 85 When a chapter of the Quran is revealed telling them to believe in God and fight along with His Messenger for His cause against His enemies, the healthy and rich ones of them ask you to exempt them from taking part in the battle for the cause of God and to let them stay home with the people who are of no help in the battle. 86 They were well-pleased to remain with those who were left behind - where for their hearts have been sealed, so that they cannot grasp the truth. 87 But the Prophet and those who have embraced the faith with him, and have fought wealth and soul (in the way of God), are blessed and will be successful. 88 Allah has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally. That is the great attainment. 89
