The Thamud accused the messengers of lies. 141 Recall when their brother Salih said to them: "Have you no fear?" 142 “I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger of Allah to you.” 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death], 146 In gardens and watersprings. 147 And cornfields and palm-trees having fine spadices? 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me; 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 and spread mischief in the land rather than set things right." 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 “You are just a human like us; therefore bring some sign if you are truthful.” 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers. 158 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 159
