Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 therein every wise bidding 4 As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 There is only One Lord. It is He who gives life and causes things to die. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 Rather they are in doubt, playing. 9 Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. 10 Covering the people, this is a painful torment. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." 14 Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). 15 On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. 16 ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them 17 saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, 18 Do not consider yourselves above God. I shall show you a manifest authority (in support of my truthfulness). 19 I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. 20 If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". 21 Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. 22 (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. 23 “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 sown fields, and how noble a station, 26 And the comfort they enjoyed. 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. 29
