The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the star when it goes down, (or vanishes). 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he misguided, 2 Nor doth he speak of (his own) desire. 3 It is no less than inspiration sent down to him: 4 taught him by one terrible in power, 5 one endowed with immense wisdom. He came forth and stood poised, 6 the strong one who appeared on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then the Spectacle became closer, and came down in full view. 8 And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer; 9 so (Allah) revealed to His worshiper (Gabriel) that which he revealed (to Prophet Muhammad). 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 So will you dispute with him over what he saw? 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. 14 Close to which is the Garden of Tranquility, 15 when the lote tree was covered in mystic splendour. 16 The sight [of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit]. 17 He saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you considered El-Lat and El-'Uzza 19 And Manat, the third, the other? 20 Are yours the males and His the females? 21 Behold, such would be indeed a division most unfair! 22 They are naught but names which you have named, you and your fathers; Allah has not sent for them any authority. They follow naught but conjecture and the low desires which (their) souls incline to; and certainly the guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Or shall man have what he coveteth? 24 Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 25
