The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 In gardens and watersprings. 147 “And fields and palm-trees, with delicate tendrils?” 148 And dwellings hewed out of mountains ingeniously? 149 Have fear of God and obey me. 150 and do not follow the biddings of those that go to excesses 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)." 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 and do her no harm, lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!" 156 But they killed her, and then they became regretful. 157 The punishment therefore seized them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 158 And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. 159
