The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 and by the moon when she follows him, 2 And by the day as it shows up (the sun's) brightness; 3 And the night when it draws a veil over it, 4 And by oath of the heaven and by oath of Him Who made it. 5 And by the earth and Him Who spread it, 6 And the soul and Him Who made it perfect, 7 And inspired it with the wickedness thereof and the piety thereof, 8 He is indeed successful who causeth it to grow, 9 And miserable is he who hath buried it. 10 The tribe of Thamud denied with rebellion. 11 when the most wicked man among them rose up. 12 And the messenger of Allah said: It is the she-camel of Allah, so let her drink! 13 But they gave him the lie, and hamstrung the she-camel. So their Lord destroyed them for their crime and razed their city to the ground. 14 He did not fear the consequences. 15
