The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the star when it sets: 1 Your companion hath not gone astray, nor hath he erred. 2 Nor does he speak out of desire. 3 It is naught save an inspiration that is inspired, 4 taught him by one terrible in power, 5 Of might, he (Gabriel) stood firm 6 While he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] was in the highest part of the horizon, 7 and then drew near, and came close, 8 And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer. 9 When He revealed to His votary what He revealed. 10 The heart [of the Prophet] did not misconstrue what he saw. 11 Will you dispute with him what he saw? 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 by the lote tree beyond which none may pass 14 near which is the Garden of Abode. 15 When the tree was covered with a covering, 16 The sight turned not aside, nor it exceeded. 17 Verily he saw one of the greater revelations of his Lord. 18 Have you really considered al-Lat and al-"Uzza, 19 and the third one, Manat? -- 20 What, have you males, and He females! 21 Behold, such would be indeed a division most unfair! 22 These are only names given by yourselves and your fathers. God has not given them any authority. They, (unbelievers), only follow mere conjecture and the desires of their souls, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord. 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
