A throng of the ancients 39 and a multitude of the later people. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense! 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 Rather, we have been prevented' 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
