He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and then turned away 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 Or that he may accept advice, so the advice may benefit him. 4 Now he who waxes indifferent, 5 To him do you address yourself. 6 What does it matter to you if he will not become pure (from disbelief, you are only a Messenger, your duty is to convey the Message of Allah). 7 And to him who came to you eagerly 8 And hath fear, 9 From him you are distracted. 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 So whosoever willeth - let him be admonished therewlth. 12 On honourable pages. 13 Exalted, pure. 14 [Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels, 15 Noble and pious. 16 Woe to man! How ungrateful he is! 17 From what did He create him? 18 Of a sperm-drop He created him, and determined him, 19 and then made the course of life easy for him, 20 then causes him to die and buries him, 21 and then, whenever He wishes, He will raise him back to life. 22 Nay, but man did not fulfil what Allah had enjoined upon him. 23 So man must look at his food. 24 We poured down rain abundantly, 25 And We split the earth in clefts, 26 And produce therein corn, 27 And grapes and fodder, 28 And olives and date-palms, 29 And gardens of dense shrubbery 30 And fruits and fodder: 31 A provision for you and for your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry shall be sounded 33 On the Day a man will flee from his brother 34 his mother, his father, 35 his wife and his children. 36 on that Day, to every one of them will his own state be of sufficient concern. 37 Some faces will shine, 38 laughing, rejoicing at glad tidings. 39 And other faces, on that day, with dust upon them, 40 and covered by darkness. 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked. 42
