He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting]. 2 You never know. Perhaps he wanted to purify himself, 3 or receive some (Quranic) advice which would benefit him. 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 you attend to him, 6 Though it is not your concern if he should not grow (in fulness). 7 But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge] 8 And is afraid (of Allah and His Punishment), 9 of him you were unmindful. 10 No indeed; this is only a Reminder. 11 For any one who desires to bear it in mind, 12 upon pages high-honoured, 13 Exalted (in dignity), purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Honourable and Pious and Just. 16 Accursed is man. How ungrateful is he! 17 Of what substance God created him? 18 From a drop of seed. He createth him and proportioneth him, 19 then the way eased for him, 20 Then He causes him to die and be buried. 21 Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life. 22 By no means he performed not that which He had commanded him. 23 Let man consider his food: 24 We poured down rain abundantly, 25 and then We cleave the earth [with new growth,] cleaving it asunder, 26 And produce therein corn, 27 And grapes and vegetables 28 olives, dates, 29 And gardens of dense shrubbery 30 And fruits and herbage: 31 Provision for you and your cattle. 32 And when the Blast shall sound, 33 it will be such a day when a person will run away from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 and his consort and his children; 36 on that Day each will be occupied with his own business, making him oblivious of all save himself. 37 (Many) faces on that day shall be bright, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And some faces will on that Day with dust be covered, 40 Blackness will cover them. 41 These are they who are unbelievers, the wicked. 42
