The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the sun and its midmorning, 1 By the moon when it followeth it, 2 And by the day as it shows up (the sun's) brightness; 3 And the night when it enshroudeth him, 4 by the heavens and that (Power) which established them, 5 And by oath of the earth and by oath of Him Who spread it. 6 And the soul and Him Who made it perfect, 7 and imbued it with (the consciousness of) its evil and its piety: 8 To a happy state shall indeed attain he who causes this [self] to grow in purity, 9 And he will indeed fail who corrupts it. 10 The Thamud denied (the truth) in their perverseness 11 when the most wicked man among them rose up. 12 But the Messenger of Allah [Salih (Saleh)] said to them: "Be cautious! Fear the evil end. That is the she-camel of Allah! (Do not harm it) and bar it not from having its drink!" 13 But they cried him lies, and hamstrung her, so their Lord crushed them for their sin, and leveled them: 14 And for Him is no fear of its consequences. 15
