The Embryo (Al-Alaq)

19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

READ IN THE name of your Lord who created, 1 Hath created man from a clot! 2 Read, for your Lord is most beneficent, 3 Who taught by the pen, 4 taught man what he did not know! 5 Nay, but verily man is rebellious 6 As he considers himself independent! 7 Surely! Unto your Lord is the return. 8 Have you seen the one who prohibits 9 a servant of Ours from prayer? 10 Did you consider: what if he is on the Right Way, 11 and enjoins piety? 12 Do you see how he has denied the truth and turned away from it? 13 Does he not know that Allah sees? 14 Let him beware! If he desist not, We will drag him by the forelock,- 15 A lying, sinful forehead. 16 So let him call on his concourse! 17 We will call the angels of Hell. 18 Nay! obey him not, and make obeisance and draw nigh (to Allah). ۩ 19
