Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 And the ten nights, 2 and the even and the odd, 3 And the night when it departs. 4 Is there (not) in these an adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand? 5 (Muhammad), consider how your Lord dealt with the tribe of Ad, 6 the people of Iram, the city of many pillars, 7 The like of which were not produced in (all) the land? 8 And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley; 9 And the mighty Pharaoh 10 Who committed inordinacy in the cities, 11 And increased therein the corruption. 12 So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment. 13 Indeed nothing is hidden from the sight of your Lord. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. 15 But when He tests him by restricting his provision, he says: 'My Lord has humiliated me' 16 Nay! but you do not honor the orphan, 17 And do not urge one another to feed the needy. 18 Why do you take away the inheritance of others indiscriminately 19 And love wealth with abounding love. 20 No! But when the earth quakes and is pounded, 21 and thy Lord comes, and the angels rank on rank, 22 And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)? 23 He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 none shall bind as He binds. 26 (On the other hand it will be said): “O serene soul! 27 Return towards your Lord – you being pleased with Him, and He pleased with you! 28 Join My servants. 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
