The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by yonder city 1 For you (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) are in this city. 2 by the begetter, and that he begot, 3 Certainly We have created man to be in distress. 4 Does he, then, think that no one has power over him? 5 He will say: 'I have destroyed a vast wealth' 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?- 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 and shown him the two paths? 10 But he would not attempt the uphill road, 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 An orphan near of kin, 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion. 17 Their place will be on the right hand. 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 and the Fire will close in on them. 20
