Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 The perspicuous Book is witness 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom 4 at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] 5 as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. 7 There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. 8 Rather they are in doubt, playing. 9 So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, 10 enveloping all mankind, [and causing the sinners to exclaim:] "Grievous is this suffering! 11 Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". 12 How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] 15 The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. 16 ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. 17 [Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger," 18 And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". 21 Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. 22 (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 And fields and grand palaces! 26 And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. 29
