O you who have wrapped up in your garments! 1 Keep watch all the night except some, 2 Half of it, or a little less than that, 3 and recite the Quran in a distinct tone; 4 Verily, We shall send down to you a weighty Word (i.e. obligations, legal laws, etc.). 5 Surely getting up at night is the best means of subduing the self and is more suitable for uprightness in speech. 6 You are indeed much occupied during the day with the affairs of the world. 7 So remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with exclusive devotion. 8 Lord of the east and the west! No God is there but He! Wherefore take Him for thy trustee. 9 And bear thou patiently what they say, and forsake them graciously. 10 Leave the prosperous disbelievers to Me and give them respite for a little while; 11 Indeed, with Us [for them] are shackles and burning fire 12 And food which choketh (the partaker), and a painful doom 13 upon the day when the earth and the mountains shall quake and the mountains become a slipping heap of sand. 14 Surely We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness over you, just as We had sent a Messenger to Pharaoh. 15 But Fir'aun (Pharaoh) disobeyed the Messenger [Musa (Moses)], so We seized him with a severe punishment. 16 If you persist in disbelieving, how will you guard yourself against the (woe of the) Day that will turn children grey-haired, 17 Whereby heaven shall be split, and its promise shall be performed. 18 This is indeed an advice; so whoever wishes may take the path towards his Lord. 19
