He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ HE FROWNED AND turned away, 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 How could you know? Perhaps he would cleanse himself, 3 or receive some (Quranic) advice which would benefit him. 4 Yet you pay attention 5 to him thou attendest 6 And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified. 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 While he fears [Allah], 9 From him thou art distracted. 10 No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder; 11 So let him who pleases mind it. 12 (It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour, 13 Exalted (in dignity), kept pure and holy, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 Noble, virtuous. 16 Accursed is man. How ungrateful is he! 17 From what substance did He create him? 18 From a single sperm He created, then proportioned him, 19 and made the path of guidance easy for him to follow. 20 Then He causes him to die and be buried. 21 and then, if it be His will, He shall raise him again to life, 22 Not one – he has not yet completed what he was commanded. 23 Let man, then, consider [the sources of] his food: 24 That We watered it in abundance. 25 and then We cleaved the earth asunder. 26 We make the grain grow out of it, 27 And grapes and fodder, 28 And olive-trees and palm-trees 29 And dense gardens, 30 and fruit and pastures, 31 A provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry comes, 33 On that day man will run away from his brother. 34 And from his mother and father, 35 his wife and his children. 36 for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns. 37 Some faces will shine, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news; 39 but others will be gloomy 40 Blackness will cover them. 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones. 42
