In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou folded in garments! 1 Keep awake [in prayer] at night, all but a small part 2 It may be half the night or a little less than that 3 or add to it [at will]; and [during that time] recite the Qur'an calmly and distinctly, with thy mind attuned to its meaning. 4 Behold, We shall cast upon thee a weighty word; 5 Surely in the watches of the night the soul is most receptive and words more telling. 6 Indeed you have a lot of matters during the day. 7 Remember the name of your Lord, and devote yourself to Him wholeheartedly. 8 He is the only Lord, so choose Him as your guardian. 9 And bear with patience what they utter, and part from them with a fair leave-taking. 10 And leave Me (alone to deal with) those in possession of the good things of life, who (yet) deny the Truth; and bear with them for a little while. 11 With Us are Fetters (to bind them), and a Fire (to burn them), 12 and food that chokes, and grievous suffering 13 upon the day when the earth and the mountains shall quake and the mountains become a slipping heap of sand. 14 Surely We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness over you, just as We had sent a Messenger to Pharaoh. 15 But Pharaoh disobeyed Our Messenger, so We seized him with a terrible seizing. 16 Then how can you avoid the punishment, if you disbelieve, on a Day that will make the children grey-headed (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)? 17 The Day when the heavens will be rent asunder and God's promise shall be fulfilled. 18 This is a reminder. Let anyone who wants, seek guidance from his Lord. 19
