We commanded Moses: "Journey by night with Our creatures, and strike a dry path for them through the sea. Do not fear being overtaken, nor have dread of any thing." 77 Then Fir'awn followed them with his hosts; and there came upon them of the sea that which came upon them. 78 And Fir'aun (Pharaoh) led his people astray, and he did not guide them. 79 Children of Israel! We saved you from your enemies and made a covenant with you on the right side of the Mountain. We sent down manna and quails. 80 (Saying): Eat of the good things wherewith We have provided you, and transgress not in respect thereof lest My wrath come upon you: and he on whom My wrath cometh, he is lost indeed. 81 And indeed I am Most Oft Forgiving for him who repented and accepted faith and did good deeds, and then remained upon guidance. 82 ۞ And (it was said): What hath made thee hasten from thy folk, O Moses? 83 He submitted, “They are here, just behind me – and O my Lord, I hastened towards You, in order to please You.” 84 He said: So surely We have tried your people after you, and the Samiri has led them astray. 85 Then Moses went back unto his folk, angry and sad. He said: O my people! Hath not your Lord promised you a fair promise? Did the time appointed then appear too long for you, or did ye wish that wrath from your Lord should come upon you, that ye broke tryst with me? 86 They answered: "We did not break our promise with you out of our own volition; but we were laden with the load of people's ornaments, and we simply threw them down(into the fire), and the Samiri also threw down something, 87 "Then he brought out (of the fire) before the (people) the image of a calf: It seemed to low: so they said: This is your god, and the god of Moses, but (Moses) has forgotten!" 88 Did they not see that it could not return to them any speech and that it did not possess for them any harm or benefit? 89
