Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 and you are dwelling in this city -- 2 and I swear by the parent and his offspring: 3 We have certainly created man into hardship. 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!" 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 And shown him the two highways? 10 But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep. 11 And what have you understood, what the valley is! 12 It is the freeing of a slave; 13 the giving of food upon the day of hunger 14 an orphaned relative 15 Or to the poor man lying in the dust. 16 Then he became one of those who believed, and recommended one another to perseverance and patience, and (also) recommended one another to pity and compassion. 17 Such are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 who will be engulfed in the fire. 20
