For years We afflicted Pharaoh's people with shortages in food so that perhaps they would take heed. 130 But they would always ascribe their well-being to themselves and the misfortunes that they would experience to Moses and his people. Their fate is certainly in the hands of God but many of them do not know. 131 They said: "Whatsoever the sign you have brought to deceive us, we shall not believe in you." 132 Then We afflicted them with a great flood and locusts, and the lice, and the frogs, and the blood. All these were distinct signs and yet they remained haughty. They were a wicked people. 133 When the torment would strike them, they would ask Moses, "Pray for us to your Lord through your covenant with Him. If He saves us from the torment, we shall certainly believe in you and permit you and the children of Israel to leave". 134 Then whensoever We removed the plague from them, till a term which they were to reach, lo! they were breaking faith. 135 So We exacted retribution from them and drowned them in the sea, because they rejected Our signs and paid no heed to them; 136 And We caused the people who had been oppressed to inherit the eastern regions of the land and the western ones, which We had blessed. And the good word of your Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel because of what they had patiently endured. And We destroyed [all] that Pharaoh and his people were producing and what they had been building. 137 And We made the children of Israel to pass the sea; then they came upon a people who kept to the worship of their idols They said: O Musa! make for us a god as they have (their) gods He said: Surely you are a people acting ignorantly: 138 That which they are engaged upon shall be shattered and all their works are vain. 139 Should I seek any god for you except Allah? He has exalted you above the nations. 140 And [recall, O Children of Israel], when We saved you from the people of Pharaoh, [who were] afflicting you with the worst torment - killing your sons and keeping your women alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord. 141
