The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds. 145 "Will you be left secure in that which you have here? 146 In gardens and fountains, 147 "And corn-fields and date-palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)? 148 Will you still hew your dwellings in the mountains? 149 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 They said, "You are only bewitched and insane. 153 Thou art but a human being like unto us. So bring thou a sign if thou art of the truth-tellers. 154 He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed, 155 "And do not touch her with evil intentions for the punishment of the Great Day will seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
