The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me: 144 I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 145 "Do you think that you will remain here peacefully forever 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 and cornfields and date-palms laden with juicy fruits? 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 Therefor keep your duty to Allah and obey me, 150 Do not obey the orders of the transgressors 151 Who corrupt the land and do not reform it." 152 They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched; 153 “You are just a human like us; therefore bring some sign if you are truthful.” 154 He said: (Behold) this she-camel. She hath the right to drink (at the well), and ye have the right to drink, (each) on an appointed day. 155 And touch her not with ill, lest there take hold of you the torment of a Mighty Day. 156 But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. 159
