The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… 4 Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. 5 Indeed, they see it [as] distant, 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 and his spouse and his brother, 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. 14 By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 But not so the worshippers 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 and go in fear of the punishment of their Lord, 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 And those who guard their private parts, 29 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 So those who desire more than this – it is they who are the transgressors. 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
