The Thamud accused the messengers of lies. 141 when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds. 145 Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death], 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 “And fields and palm-trees, with delicate tendrils?” 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear you God, and obey you me; 150 Do not obey the orders of the transgressors 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful." 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day." 156 But they hamstrung her; and on the morrow were repentant, 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
