Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Ha Mim! 1 By the Clear Book. 2 We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. 3 Therein every wise affair is made distinct, 4 By a command from Us indeed it is We Who send. 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. 7 There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. 8 Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. 9 Wait for the day (which will come before the Day of Judgment) when the sky will give out dense smoke 10 engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. 12 How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. 13 and they turned away, saying, "He is a trained and insane person". 14 Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. 15 One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! 16 ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, 17 (and said): “Deliver to me Allah's servants. I am a trustworthy Messenger to you, 18 And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” 19 “And I take the refuge of my Lord and yours, against your stoning me.” 20 And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. 21 (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." 22 We commanded him, “Journey with My bondmen in a part of the night you will be pursued.” 23 Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 And cornfields and noble places! 26 And comfort wherein they were amused. 27 Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. 28 And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again). 29
