The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the setting star, 1 Your comrade erreth not, nor is deceived; 2 nor speaks he out of caprice. 3 It [the Quran] is nothing but revelation sent down to him. 4 Bestowed on him by the Supreme Intellect, 5 very strong; he stood poised, 6 And reached the highest pinnacle. 7 Then he drew near, then he bowed 8 And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer. 9 And thus did [God] reveal unto His servant whatever He deemed right to reveal. 10 The heart did not lie [about] what it saw. 11 Will you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 Indeed, he saw him in another descent 13 By the Lote-tree beyond which none can pass, 14 Near it is the Garden of Abode. 15 When that covered the lote-tree which did cover it! 16 The sight did not shift, nor did it cross the limits. 17 and he certainly saw some of the greatest Signs of His Lord. 18 HAVE YOU, then, ever considered [what you are worshipping in] Al-Lat and Al-Uzza, 19 and Manat the third, the other? 20 What, have you males, and He females? 21 This is certainly an unjust apportioning. 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them. 23 Does man imagine that whatever he wishes for is right for him? 24 But unto Allah belongeth the after (life), and the former. 25
