A crowd of earlier generations 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 neither cool nor good. 44 Indeed they were among favours before this. 45 And used to persist in the awful sin. 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 Drinking even as the camel drinketh. 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 It is We who have created you. Why then did you not testify to the Truth? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten – 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 If We will We can make it like dry trampled hay, so you would keep crying out. 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out; 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers, 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
