The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
A requester seeks the punishment that will take place 1 The infidels, of which there is no averter. 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 (Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, 6 But We see it very near. 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 And not a friend shall ask a friend, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 And the family in which he was. 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 tearing away his skin! 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. 18 ۞ Verily man is impatient by nature: 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 Not so those devoted to Prayer;- 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 for such as ask [for help] and such as are deprived [of what is good in life]; 25 and who accept as true the [coming of the] Day of Judgment; 26 And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- 27 Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, 28 And those who guard their sex except from their wives and women slaves of old 29 Are free of blame, 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
