The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 Arise and warn! 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 And your garments purify! 4 And stay away from idols. 5 And bestow not favour that thou mayest receive more. 6 And for the sake of your Lord, patiently endure. 7 So when the Trumpet will be blown. 8 Surely that day will be a day of anguish, 9 Dolorous for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 And children to be by his side! 13 And made several preparations for him. 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 Never! For he is an enemy to Our signs! 16 Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 death seize him, how he determined! 19 Let him be destroyed. How he calculated! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 He said, 'This is naught but a trumped-up sorcery; 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 [Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]! 26 And what will make you know exactly what Hell-fire is? 27 It neither leaves, nor spares. 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 Over it are appointed nineteen. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
