Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the dawn; 1 by the Ten Nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 And the night when it departs. 4 Is there not an evidence in this for those who have sense? 5 Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),- 6 the people of Iram, the city of many pillars, 7 The like of which was not built in the cities, 8 And Thamood, who hewed out the rocks of the valley? 9 And with Fir'awn, owner of the stakes 10 Who all waxed exorbitant in the cities, 11 And multiplied corruption. 12 Therefore your Lord let down upon them a portion of the chastisement. 13 Your Lord is certainly in wait. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him by exalting him and bestowing His bounties upon him, he says: “My Lord has exalted me.” 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 No indeed; but you honour not the orphan, 17 Nor urge upon each other the feeding of the poor, 18 And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether, 19 And you harbour intense love for wealth. 20 Nay! When the earth is pounded to powder, 21 and when your Lord appears with rows upon rows of angels, 22 And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him? 23 He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!” 24 None punisheth as He will punish on that day! 25 None bindeth as He then will bind. 26 Serene soul, 27 return unto thy Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing! 28 Then enter the ranks of My chosen bondmen! 29 Enter My Paradise." 30
